Pride and Joy

I forget, it is still cool to pose with your cat?

What about wearing purple socks and mom jeans, with leggings underneath them for warmth?

I think they are "cool" because one, the "hipster" culture dictates them to be so.  Let's face it, anything "cool" is completely constructed by the society, hipster or mainstream. In the world of hipsters, dorky, ugly outfits are completely "off the hook" on the "rad-meter". So why do I care about what hipsters say about my outfits? Other than the fact that it's kind of nice to be considered "cool" (especially when I was never thought as that growing up) but dressing ironically is probably the most cost effective way to catch people's attention with your outfits. Not to mention the kind of gems you stumble upon while thrift shopping. The point is, it's never necessary to be bothered by what others say about your outfits but it's also silly to pretend that you're not interested in people's compliments. All I've been hearing from "hipster" fashion people are how much they don't care about what other people think but the truth is, some of them do, a great deal in fact. So yeah, dress as ironic as you want, people are going to talk about how much of a fucking hipster you are but don't act like you're not flattered when hearing about how much people are jealous of your one of a kind, vintage, neon, teapot sweater dress.

Sunday Funday

Weekends are wonderful because they provide ample amount of downtime to be productive.

In addition to finishing a complete season of Frasier on Friday night, I cleaned my entire apartment on Saturday! In the spirit of being fruitful and constructive, I spent today out and about enjoying the city.

It began with attending the Taboo Sex Show, which was actually kind of disappointing. Jeremy and I spent most of the time avoiding salespeople trying to unload the latest dildos and flavoured lubes, and butt plugs, and clit tinglers, and bondage tapes and what have you upon us. We quickly darted through the "sex-sells" galore, got our free entrance tickets   eyefuls and found the nearest exit.

We proceeded with a viewing of Django; the newest Quentin Tarantino movie, to which I must say made up for the shortcomings of the earlier sex show. Later, we went for awesome Chinese food and with that our day ended. Now I'm at home, crying over the gashes in my new creeper shoes. What the fuck, why are they so flimsy?

Laughing with a Mouth of Blood

What the fuck. Am I actually cracking more than a coy smile here? No. Way!

I just recently realized why I don't smile as often as I should. My imperfect teeth an my obviously ethically Chinese looking eyes. Yes. Sounds silly but I have had the biggest insecurities about looking Chinese and gap toothed.

Well, it's 2013 and I'm over them now. I'm also drunk while I'm blogging. Take that, self-consiousness! Happy new year, everybody.

Twelve Days of Christmas Sweaters - Day 1:Peacock colours and a Pair of Docs

Hello! As Christmas is fast approaching, I am going full throttle with decking myself out with some of my favourite sweaters!

Since I'm a few days behind the first day of twelve days before Christmas (This sentence is like a word problem), I'm going double up a couple of outfit photos to make it in time for the 25th.

Stay tuned, stay excited and stay warm, everybody.

Granny Hipster

I wish I could make a living by selling things that I make.

It's getting really cold and I'm starting a few knitting projects. Hopefully if they're good enough they'll make it onto Etsy.

Most people complain about the cold during these months but I think it's nice. Because I get to do things like sit on my ass all day with my cats and my knitting, watching shows on Netflix.

Breaking Dawn

I watched the last Twilight movie in theatres today. It was not by choice but out of altruism. The movie didn't make much sense to me because I've never seen the previous ones nor am I familiar with the story. It was, however, exactly what I had expected from a sensationalized vampire love story.

Right down to the supposed "witty" and "funny" lines in the movie, Breaking Dawn caters to the demographic of today's tween wavers by being both accessibly relatable (cheesy jokes and shallow banters) yet fantastically idealistic (half human, half vampire fetus). It is the pinnacle of mediocracy. The epitome of all badly written and directed but well produced story of "love-lasts-forever". All glossed over and fast-food like, Breaking Dawn trivializes just about everything young people need to learn about living a productive life.

The Twilight series is like Disney movies for an older audience. Except everything is replaced with extremely attractive people with nothing better to do but to fall selfishly in love at the risk of bringing absolute horror and destruction upon themselves and those around them. The extremely simplified theme of "love conquers all" is so blatant that the story itself doesn't actually add any rich context to make it in any way movie or worth watching/reading (there are Twilight novels, apparently). Furthermore, I did not find any of the characters captivating. Perhaps it was because they were all terrible actors but I could not for the life of me understand the love between Bella and Edward. Also, after five movies it seemed that Bella is still the same fucking person in the sense that after all the shit has happened and everything she's gone through, she has not developed as a character at all. She is, in the end a stock character in the story. This is ironic because she completely died as a human and came back as a vampire in Breaking Dawn.

If this is the kind of shit young people are into these days then I am seriously worried. And here I am worried that Disney was going to the demise of the future generation.

Fly Like an Eagle

Tonight was probably one of the best Tuesday nights I've had in a long time. My band,  Scrambled Debutante officially released our first three song EP and had a premiere/interview with Y57 Media where the they broadcasted, for the first time, our finished tracks!

Oh hey, we also had an in-studio acoustic performance/interview at CJSF last night, previewing our premier tonight!

Holy fuck balls. This is excited shit! That's why I'm wearing my eagle sweater today because I think eagles must feel awesome all the time and I feel awesome today, like a fucking eagle!

We have all of our songs on bandcamp available for download for free or by donation. Go listen now!

Dress like Grimace

It's not winter yet and I'm already sick. Pretty sure I ran an all-day low grade fever yesterday and yet I still went for a run for an hour, did some heavy lifting and had children scream in my face while defencelessly threw my arms around my head, trying to muff out as much of everything as I can.

Today, I'm taking a day off.

To make up for me feeling shitty, I think of these boots. No, you don't have x-ray vision. They are in fact see-through.

These are the Vancouver hipster version of Cinderella's glass slippers. Except they will never fall off my feet because they are rain boots. Come to think of it, if Cinderella wore these she would've never had her prince coming to rescue her from her shitty home. She would've had to think of a way to break out of that room, somehow elude her evil step mother and sisters, start a new life and become a feminist then later join an all-girl hardcore punk band.

Jeremy was looking super lumber-jackish and I found it stylishly hilarious so I asked him to pose for my blog.

I must say, he's a natural at modelling.

Sweater Time Again

When it's cold enough to showcase my sweaters on blogger, there really is no need to be loquacious. Plus, I've also been at a loss for words lately so I'll just let my photos do the talking.

I'm whipping out all the knitwear for winter and I'm getting quite stoked about that prospect.  Just think about how much easier it would be to get ready every morning when you know exactly how frumpily stylish you want to be, swimming in a different sweater, everyday.

Sometimes a toque does the trick when you're aiming for the "cozy and lazy thus ironically hip" look. This is how this outfit came to be.
Oh dear readers. I really wish I could share some profound writings with you all, but like I said,  my opinions are not so readily springing into life and translating well into cohesion that can be published on "web paper". However, I'm still full of angst, and what I think are sensible and well-thought out analyses surrounding some of the most titillating problems of my modern day life, so I guess that's good. Perhaps I've been video gaming too much...

Sunday Outfit Photo Dump (#2)

It's outfit dump time. This past week has been hard to dress for due to the unrelenting rain we've been having in Vancouver. I managed to pull some decent outfits together with the versatility of grandpa pants and vintage booties.

Of course layering is also a must if you live in Canada. That and thermal socks.

The light sweaters are slowly making their out of my daily wardrobe as the coldness encourages the use of more hefty knitwear. Next week, I'll be all draped in oversized sweaters and chunky wools. Can't wait.

Funemployment

Hello blogosphere at 5:30 A.M.! As of yesterday I handed in my two weeks notice at my place of employment. This may seem unwise considering I need it to pay the bills and support my insatiable online and thrift shopping obsessions.

In reality, I have been mulling over this decision for a very long time, since last year to be exact. Actually, ever since I started talking everyone at work into joining an union because there had been absolute no workers/supervisor egalitarianism or job security. It has been a year since that fiasco and even though we voted and won our rights to join the union, I have never stopped fighting my boss over issues such as fair treatment of every staff, gender discrimination (it is still the unspoken rule that male staff are not allowed to be left alone with the children we provide care for, because it "looks bad" by virtue of the fact that males are seemingly "more dangerous" and "more likely to molest kids") and managerial accountability. After all, he does run a non-profit society for children for fuck sakes! Shouldn't us adults lead by example by advocating equality, freedom and the rights of everyone? You see, this is where people get lost on, the whole rights for everyone thing. Most people think unions only protect workers and make managers and supervisors jobs difficult. Yes, this can certainly be the case however, from what I understand based on the basic functions of what unions do, they actually provide as an impartial, third-party scrutinizer for worksites. This means, accountability and responsibility need to come from both the workers and the managers. My boss, on the other hand, thought unions are going to make him lose his job or give his employees too much right that we'll go and ransack his office, or somehow get away with kidnapping his family or something. Seriously though, he was fucking paranoid.

So ever the past year; after our winning of the union vote and during our "pre-unionized limbo", I've been nothing but brutally honest with my boss about just how unhappy I've been with the practices and philosophies at WCASS (workplace acronym). I have had many a shouting matches over the phone and in person with various managers about their hypocritical and ludicrous way of dealing certain cases. Though all of which have something to do with fair treatment and equal rights but they ultimately affect the lives of the kids we provide care for. Thus, putting my self-righteous ego aside, a huge part of me is tormented by the paradox and irony of all of it. I sometimes find it hard to face the kids and teach them about being fair and respectful for every person and living creature whilst putting away cheques signed by people who think it's perfectly ok to execute brilliant plans such as relocate an unwilling staff because another staff complained about her being "too pretty" which "distracted" the kids from their daily activities and fire people during the middle of a union movement.

In a way, I feel like I've failed the kids for leaving and having to lie to them why I will be leaving. Through I know that it will not be fair for me lay the real reason behind my leaving nor would it be productive in a sense that trying to explain something like this to them now would only do more harm than good. The shittiest thing about this whole thing is that I feel selfish for not sucking it up and do it for the kids. I just hope someone else would come along and set a better example for them.
Moving on to the future, my unofficial last day is next friday but really I'm suppose to stay for another week after that. At this point, I don't think it'll make a difference how long I stay because the human resources department which consists of only one person - my boss (autocracy much?) will "have time" to find someone to replace me. I am going to look at job postings on craigslist now. Wish me luck.

School's Out

Growing up is exciting. I know that because I literally experience it every day. Both in myself as well as vicariously through the kids I work with. That's the other cool thing about hanging out with kids is that you never really introspectively think about just how much your own self have grown until you see it in others. Being the outsider looking in on the lives of these children serves as an alternative perspective which can some times provide valuable information about the self or makes you feel very, very old.

Some kids graduated today and some moved onto a higher grade. For the sentimental and attentive ones, I say onto thee, "hey kids, congratulations, enjoy the best years of your life then start a fashion blog and rant about things in the most esoteric and sporadic way possible."
